Orvis bamboo casting rods
Question
I have three Orvis impregnated five foot, two piece, casting rods which were given to my father when he retired in the 60's. Serial #'s are 34609 (1/4 oz) 34682 (1/2-5/8 oz) and 35782 (3/4 oz). They have never been used and are in original sleeves and case. The handle which went the rods is missing. Any idea where I could find one? I think casting rod of this sort are rare. Do they have value?
Answer
Sorry about being late. My area of expertise is trout fly rods made of bamboo. Casting rods are not in any books I have seen or read except museum pieces.
By value I assume you mean cash in trade. You might look at eBay but most fly rod guys either love or hate Orvis impregnated rods. The quote goes like this 搈ade to last, not to cast?but that抯 fly rods. I own several beautiful restored casting rods and I have attempted to sale them with no success. I use them now. There is no way to determine if they are rare or not as the audience for that is too small for me to find.
The missing handle ?I assume you mean a rod section not just the cork handle. Orvis might have one ?they have been in business a long time and I believe they still are . on the web http://www.orvis.com . They have a hunting and fishing support email system . Ask them about value , too. I could make you a new cork handle in any specifications you need ?you can buy them pre built in a few styles and glue them with water proof wood glue.
