Cleaner dams
Question
Dan, thanks SO much for your detailed answer!! Please give me more info on weeds - what kind? I think it would be great to introduce bass and weeds then. My kids do fishing in our dam, and enjoy it tremendously!! Regards, Looney

Question -
Some guy asked about fish that can help keep a dam clean. To add to this - a natural dam on our property, has murky water. The dam has a large school of bream fishes, so the water must be healthy. What is the pros and cons of adding bass to keep the water clear and clean ? Any other suggestions ?
Answer -
You want a well balanced lake. This includes the proper amount of bass and bluegill/sunfish/bream. Bass grow well when feeding on the sunfish family, as well as crayfish.
Too many bluegills can cause problems.
Crappie are sometimes placed in smaller ponds, but it isn't a good idea since they are terrible "nest raiders" of the bass.
You want to keep carp out, unless there are a few grass carp, and even then there can be problems down the road.
Weeds are the most important factor, as they will filter out bacteria, and other harmful items. In the process they will keep the pond/lake clearer.
I'm not sure if this has answered your question completely, but hope it has helped in someway.

Answer
I would suggest some water cabbage. However, your best bet would be to speak with a local DNR and/or soil conservation agent. These people can give you an idea of the amount of bass that should be stocked, along with the types and amount of weeds which should be introduced.
For example, very few places shold be having certain types of milfoil, but there are lakes that will withstand it if there is a heavy population of carp. So you can see why I suggest that you speak to local experts, as they will know best as to what you should have for your particular lake, and region.
Hope this has helped, and, as I said before, if there are any further questions on this or other subjects please feel free to get in touch.
Best of fishing,
Dan
