knots/hitches

Question
What kind of knot or hitch should I use at the end of my cane pole to keep it from trying to double back on itself when I hook a fish ? The rod has a loop at the tip and is tiny in diameter . I would like to be able to adjust the length of my line for different conditions so a permanent knot isn't feasable. Thanks in advace.5

My grandfather used to tape a small casting reel to the pole.  One such reel is a Panfish 16, marketed by South Bend.  This is the perfect reel for a cane pole, or ice fishing casting style rod.
