bamboo restore
Question
I am looking for tips on how to repair delamination on a bamboo fly rod. type of glue etc.
Answer
First of all , you need to strip the finish and rewrap as well as reapply finish after re-glueing as follows.
I use Titebond II, water proof glue delaminations. I also pull gently on strips to get all failed glue exposed. (after removing all thread wraps and sometimes ferrules, use heat and pressure to remove ferrules- see previous question on this site). I use cotton string as clamps. You lay out your rod ready to go together, have masking tape strips ready to gently hold it together after applying glue. Lay the rod / strips on the exposed tape ready to roll together with glue on the open areas. You can't over use glue because you are going to wrap the rod with cotton string under tension. Light kite string or thick sewing thread. works fine I use a sewing machine thread holder or you can get a Flexcoat Thread Tension Device from Mudhole (http://shop.mudhole.com ). Over wrap the string to get it to hold. The string should have at least 5 lbs pull on it so it squeezes the glue down to a millimeter, leaving no glue lines.Wrap above and below all glued areas and back with an X every .5 inches. I hang the glued rod for 24- 48 hours . I use sand paper 800 ?1000 grit and razor blades to carefully remove excess glue. Unwinding the string takes most of the glue off.
Good luck with this.
