How can I get a guiding job?
Question
I live in Tallahassee Florida. I would like to stay at a lodge as part of my pay. The idea is to work and see another part of the country (or world). So amywhere is fine. I am originally from Berkeley California.
Even if I could work at a lodge part time(not necessarily a guide)close to good fishing areas (and fish on my off time) Id be happy. Retired people often work for the state parks and get mimimum wage. I am trying to do a little more upscale version where I get room and board with a little pocket change. I am single, 53, and the house is paid for so I only have obligations during the Fall and Spring semesters to my college. Does this change your answer at all? Thanks for your ideas!

Question -
I teach at the college level and have summers off. Would like to work at/for a fishing resort for a small amount of money and room and board during the summer. I am an accomplished fly fisher in salt and freshwater and have owned a boat for years. I would enjoy teaching or just working in a fishing environment over the summer. Is this possible? I am free form May to August this year. In country or out doesnt matter. The more exotic the better. I have no idea how to make this happen. I do not have a captain license. Any advise would me much appreciated.

Some Times timing is everything...
I got the following inquiry today..
Hi Jim,
We at Tenaya Lodge are frequently asked for fishing guides for Bass Lake, CA. Do you have any contacts in our area?
Thanks much,

I have been unable to find a guide for this lodge. I am sure there are plenty of venues looking for Fly Fishermen that can teach fly fishing. I do know that Orvis has a program to certify guides and instructors and I would suggest you look into that. Captains License is not necessary if you are guiding from land, but if you are guiding from a boat that is determined by the local laws.
It would help to know where you live or at least what area of the country.

Answer
I would contact some of the local resorts and INN's. You may be able to teach locally a fly fishing class.. Some kind of Basic Class.
Beyond that just start contacting Lodges around the world. Your education will help I am sure and you never know what you might find. I would start with lodges in areas that are heavy on Fly Fishing. Colorado, Wyoming, Idaho, Utah, etc.
You may work your way into a job as a guide that way. Working with another guide as an apprentice is always a great way to learn and to begin. Captain's license may not be necessary unless you are fishing coastal waters, or using a boat on waters that run between states. Still a Coast Guard 6 Pack license may not be a bad idea.
