HI Tonkin Cane Fly Rod
Question
I have a fly rod that was my uncles. It is in a 4 piece cloth bag inside a metal tube. Part of the label on the bag is missing, but what is there, reads Horrocks-Ibbotson Co. and the rod is 8&1/2 feet, three pieces with an extra tip. The label on the rod is a fish wrapped around the letters HI, also printed is "Genuine Tonkin Cane". The name is written, is "Spinner". The handle is a grey and black marble, the markings are black. The rod is in excellent condition.
Any info on the rod would nice. Thanks Pam

What you have is probably a Horrocks-Ibbotson rod. They were mass produced , rather heavy and very slow. Most collectors scorn them and often with good reason but not always.
You can read about the history and get an idea of their value in the following books:
Antique & Collectable Fishing Rods: Identification & Value Guide Homel, Dan. 1997
Bamboo Rod Restoration Handbook -Michael Sinclair ( good info on old rods , too)
Sorry I can抰 give you a specific value but I have a firm policy that I evaluate rods only if I can see them. I am in Denver and you ?
The Spinner fly rod was made by rod Horrocks-Ibbotson in the 1930s selling for $16, highest price was 30 , lowest was 7 , so it is a medium quality rod. I would check eBay to see if any have sold and how much.
Good luck
