find out what weight line to use
Question
i was given a thirty year old daiwa rod from my great uncle. i want to use it but i dont know the weight of reel and line to use eg 5/6 or 7/8.it was bought in america it is 9ft long and has a label on it saying DAIWA HIPOWER AND A MODEL NUMBER F902H. DO YOU THINK IT WILL BE WORTH MUCH THANKS DARREN
Answer
Darren,
I am not sure this is even a bamboo fly rod. (Which is were the resale value of vintage rods is) Does it look like wood as opposed to plastic (graphite)? fiber glass ? Daiwa is not a bamboo rod maker of any size that I have heard of. Daiwa does make modern new graphite rods. From your question I am assuming it is a fly rod. Being 9 foot I am guessing 6 wt line. I test line weight for free in Denver. You might try fly shop and ask them to test it with different weights , they have them on reels. If you know how to cast it would help allot, you could ask them to test reels with different line weights starting at 6 and try 7 and 5.
Check ebay for resale value.
Good luck with this.
