saltwater catfish
Question
I used to live on Lake Hardin in GA. My favorite fish to skin and eat was catfish. Carp of course were most fun to catch. Anyway, now I live in Tampa and caught some catfish in the bay. Some people say they are poisoness to eat, others say they are not. One person said their is no such thing as a saltwater catfish, which is obviously wrong. I have it skinned and froze. My daughter would be enjoying the meal as well, so I wanted to be sure they are edible. Any knolage on this?
Answer
I have caught the catfish you are talking about. Big Long fins on the back called a Sailfin Catfish. I have never eaten them and was told while I was in Florida that they were not good to eat. I would contact the biologist at the Florida Department of Fish and Wildlife. I am a Kentucky Boy and when people tell me something is not good to eat out of the ocean I tend to not eat it.. However that was 25 years or more ago that folks told me that. I honestly do not know for SURE. Like I said contact the Florida Department of Fish and Wildlife. I am sure someone there will give you an honest answer.
