Value of a Split Bamboo Fly Rod I found
Question
I just found a Heddon Split Bamboo Flyrod in an old storage shed. It is a three piece rod with two tips, one lighter and one heavier. It is 8'-9wt and on the side it says, "H C Howd" And on the other side "Heddon." It is in great shape, in original sock and case. However, the reel seat looks plastic. But all eyelets are secure and the clear coat is clear, not milky or cracked. I was wondering how old you thought it might be. And I was wondering what you thought it might be worth?
Answer
Hi Brian,
I don't claim to be an expert on old bamboo rods, but I can tell you what I know.
I'm not sure what that HC Howd is on the rod. I ran into this before and it turned out to be the tackle shop that sold them. I guess that they would put the tackle shop names on them if you were a dealer.
The "plastic" reel seat that you see is probably Bakelite. That was a very early early version of plastic that became popular in the 40's. That is what I'd guess the age to be.
If it's real plastic I could be from the 1950's.
As for value, it sounds like it is in great shape. If it is from the 40's, I've seen them go for $500-600. If it's from the 50's, obviously less. In either case, I'm sure it's worth at least $300-$350.
There are several identification books available to help you check the value. My favorite is E-bay! I think the prices on E-bay are more accurate than some of the books.
That's a great find!
