fly reel
Question
Ihow do I put my line on a fly reel
thanksyou
Answer
Hi Elizabeth,
If you bought a new line, it's on the store spool right now with the tip at the bottom and the butt of the fly line ready to tie on. On some reels you may need a lot of backing and some you will just a little backing. In either case you will need some backing. The cheapest way to do it is get to a good fly shop and have them put some on off a bulk spool. They will charge you a few cents a yard and you wont need to buy a whole spool. Then the butt end of your fly line gets attached to the backing using a "nail knot". There is probably instructions with the fly line to show you how to do that. If not, google "nail knot" and you will find good diagrams on how to do it.
Once you are tied to the backing, put a pencil through the hole in the spool and have someone hold it while you wind on the line. Put a little tension on the line with your free hand and move it back and forth to get it on level.
Thats all there is to it. If any of that doesn't make sense, write back and I'd be glad to clarify.
