Grass Carp
Question
QUESTION: I am in an area of South Carolina where not alot of people fish for carp. I love to catch them and haven't been able to locate them until recently. I found an area that was stocked with grass carps to control the weeds. What are some good baits for catching grass carp? Also, what is the best way to locate the largest number of fish?
ANSWER: Sterile Grass CARP are certainly used for weed control, and they are voracious eaters...The term "GRASS CARP" is however a misnomer, as these particular species are really called
WHITE AMUR.
I have found one of the best ways to catch these fish is to use RANGE CUBES,,,you can chum the area, 4-6 hours before fishing, the drill out a range cube and put it on the hook, or preferably use a "HAIR RIG" which is explained on my site
They are powerful fish, so anticipate a powerful run, and leave your bail open or you might just loose you set up !

or see my site at
www.texascag.com
and go to hair rigs....
after it is tied a small twig will hold it in place...
they have also been known to take sweet corn, right out of the can,,,just string on 4-5 kernels..
good luck !
---------- FOLLOW-UP ----------
QUESTION: My follow up question is about locating the fish. Where is the best way to locate large quantities of fish. I know they forage but is there any area in particular that i should aim for first. The lake is about 75 acres and a weedy bottom. Thanks for the help!
Answer
Location can be difficult...
Look for some surface disturbances, breaking waters swirls etc,,,
look for streams of bubbles on the surface, this means that the fish are "ROUTING AROUND" on the bottom,Features in the water, brush drop offs etc,
I would also try to "BAIT UP" an area several hours before fishing with range cubes
Heddon #17 Restoration?
defective crankbait maybe?
