QuestionI was wondering if there was any way to tell how much my Heddon #17 fly fishing rod is worth. Also, are there any tell tale signs that can identify if it's been restored? The only writing on the rod is "Heddon" diagonal - near the cork handle. The tag on the bag says #17 - 8 1/2' - 2 Fer. The rod is shiny and smooth, but there is no reel and the handle on the tip is missing. Only the cork is present. I'd send a picture, but I'm not sure how to attach it to this. Thanks
AnswerHeidi,
There are three Heddon models #17 in 4 lengths
7 1/2 , 8 , and 8 1/2 feet all were 3 sections / 2 tips but the 7 /12 which is a 2 section with 2 tips.
I can't tell you the price of your rod without condition. and I do condition only in person. I am in Denver and charge nothing for estimates. However I can tell you what my book has for prices (Antique & Collectable Fishing Rods: Identification & Value Guide Homel, Dan. 1997) Please do not quote me!

Yes I can tell if a rod has been refinished by silk thread color , confirming metal composition, reel seat and cork handle styles all need to be original. Check for finish that is modern or coming off. I don't know what a "handle on the tip " is ? Do you mean guide on the tip top ? We call them tip tops.
Most people over rate the conditions of their rods and are disappointed at the actual price they can get for them. If you don't have 2 tips or any part of the rod is missing it is in poor condition.
Pictures can be sent to
[email protected]. If you are missing a tip top I can help you find one at cost and you can use epoxy to glue it back on.
Good Luck
