Wright & McGill Bamboo Fly Rod
Question
Good Morning! While organizing my garage yesterday I got the bug & started tuning up my fishing equipmemt. In the course of doing so I came across a all metal tube (that my deceased father gave me back when I was 16.) the tube is marked Wright & McGill (with Granger underneath);then Aristocrat Rod;then Number GA. 7030;then lenght 7 ft. weight 3 oz. to the left of this info is a eagle clutching a fish with the copy right 1930. on the reverse side are the care instructions. the tube is a screw on cap type. When I opened the tube to my pure delight I found two fly rods. One is obviously the one intended for the tube. It is of bamboo construction (of a rich hazel nut coloring ) above the cork handle are the written words granger aristocrat then Wright & McGill. There are two completing lenghts;(I believe them to be of different actions but they have no markings indicating such). Being a 50 plus kid in a toy store I put the rod together. The balance was superb. Can you fill me in on what I have here? I'd love to wet a line with it. Unfortunately my teens are not home so I can't send you a picture (my wife had to get me on the net); I do most sincerely thank you for your time & help; Dave
Answer
Dave,
The Wright & McGill (Granger) model Aristocrat 7 ft was 2 sections 2 tips. If one tip is not the same length as the butt and another tip , then it is broken. The Aristocrat was not a funny switcherroo type rod. Sounds like Dad put something together. My prices come from "Antique & Collectable Fishing Rods: Identification & Value Guide Homel, Dan. 1997".The 'Aristocrat' 7 foot is listed as poor-fair $175, good=vg $450 and ex-mint $775. You have a great rod there and could probably get more unless it is broken.
