South Bend Flyrod
Question
I have been given a South Bend 9' bamboo flyrod. It bears the label (handwriiten black ink) "Premeier". Under that are found the initials "H. T. #77". The T may be a J. It also bears the name "Orville Swaim" which I presume was the first owner. It is three pieces with room for an extra tip that is not present. The rod no. is 377 or 977. I was looking for information regarding history and value. The condition is average to good.
Answer
Joe,
South Bend always used numbers never model names . There was a fly model #77 9 ft 3 section 2 tip rod . Homel says 35, 80 150 for poor, good, mint respectively. Without a 2nd tip I would offer under 80 and over 35. If restored I could probably get more than 150. I am not buying rods like this at this time.
It could also be a 357 but that was 8 1/2 ft.
Books I use to verify this info are:
Antique & Collectable Fishing Rods: Identification & Value Guide Homel, Dan. 1997
And
Bamboo Rod Restoration Handbook -Michael Sinclair ( good info on old rods , too) they can be found in major libraries.
Please do not quote me but you may quote the books. I don抰 evaluate condition unless I see the rods in person. I don抰 charge for evaluations , I am in Denver, CO.
There is history for thee South Bend company on the internet. I have mentioned the locations in previous questions.
Good luck
