Snagging
Question
What can you tell me about snagging. How to set up a pole to do that and what all I need. If you cant answer could you please let me know a website that would give me this information, or another expert that might be able to help with this. Anything at all would be greatly appreciated. I am from Iowa if that helps and we just got a new state record carp of 86 lbs snagged out of a nearby lake. I know it is legal cause a game warden told us about it. I just am not sure how you go about setting up something like this and exactly how its done. Thanks for your time and expertise.

Answer
The snagging I am familiar with normally takes place around dams. Although I guess if you can see the fish it would work as well.
Normally here in Kentucky guys use a heavy duty Treble Hook with a weight embedded around the shank. Cast it out and pull it through the water snagging fish. Here we do it more for Spoonbill cats during the spawning season.
Kentucky has a "season" for it and we are not allowed to do it during other seasons. I am guessing that it is allowed in your state to help curb Carp numbers in your lakes and streams.
You want a fairly sturdy rod.. at least 6 feet long if not longer. Use heavy line 30 to 50 pound test..and of course the special hook. Talk to your local tackle dealer there may be another version or legal way of rigging for this. BE SURE to ask the Game Warden as well. I know guys here if they rig wrong are in violation.
Different States have different legal restrictions on snagging and Iowa sounds like it is a bit more liberal than Kentucky.
