QuestionSir, I found your email on a website talking about fishing Lake Seminole. My wife and I are planning on taking a trip to the lake soon. I did read that you are primarily a bass fisherman however, do you know of any good spots to do some flathead cat fishing on the lake? Thanks John
AnswerJohn; I have not heard of much in the way of flathead catfishing on the lake itself but I do know that all three rivers are flathead territory.
I am sure there are some flatheads in the lake but I have no information on just where. However, what I know about these fish is that they are channel loving fish. They would likely be in one of the river channels of the lake.
I would say that if you want to fish the lake for these fish you might contact the Georgia Fish and Game dept. or try asking the question on our fishing site. One of the members of the site who often answers such questions is a Marine Biologist who would likely know. The website is "fishing.about.com" and is headed by Ronnie Garrison. You will have to sign up to post a question but it is free.
Or you can try sending an e-mail to
[email protected] and ask him about these fish.
I do know that the Flint and the Chatahoochee Rivers both of which can be reached from landings on the lake. The Appalachicola River has numerous landings below the dam for fishing the river.
Again if it is fishing on the lake itself that you want I would use live brim on heavy tackle and circle hooks big enough to handle big fish. I would look for bends in the river channel marked by buoys and look for the deepest water I could find. If you have fished for these fish before you probably know more about it than I do.
From the dam up to the city of Bainbridge on the Flint is about 25 miles as the channel runs and the Chatahoochee is almost as long. The two rivers join about a mile above the dam. The rivers run from 20 to 35 feet deep in most places. The rest of the lake is much shallower. A map of the lake would be essential in following the channel.
Sorry I could not do a better job but I have not actually fished for flatheads myself only heard about them. I have always wanted to spend a few days on one of the rivers fishing for them but so far I haven't gotten the opportunity.
Thank you for calling on me to answer your question. Sorry I could not do better but Kevin or Ronnie should be able to help.
If you have other questions please feel free to call on me.
I am
