Fly Rod Weight / Split Cane Rods
Question
Rich,
First question... I'm new to fly fishing and recently I was talking to a person who was saying that they fished with a 0wt, 1wt and 2wt fly rods. Is there such a thing?
Second question... my father pasted away a number of years ago (1976) and I was going through some of his old fishing rods and after 30 years I noticed what looks like a bamboo fly rod. Is this a split cane rod? My first thought was to try it out but thought better of it - afraid it was dry and would split. Can I recondition this rod?
Regards,
Bill
Answer
Bill,
Certainly there are 1 wt and 2 wt rods. I think there is 0 weight but I am not sure.
All bamboo rods are split cane rods unless you have a Huck Finn , no reel bamboo rod.
Yes you can recondition this rod with a new finish, tung oil, finish wax, linseed or similar clear finishes.
I doubt if you rod can dry out.
I restore rods , give me more information and I will tell you if it's collectors value might make it worth it. I always recommend fishing bamboo rods.
