line for baitcasting rod
Question
what type of line is best for a medium-heavy bait casting rod. i'm planning on using 17lb/test.
I heard that fluoro is a good choice.
And is an 80 pound fluoro leader strong enough to withstand a pike or musky?
Answer
I'm not sure what you mean by medium-heavy.
If it is a full fledged musky rod I would recommend 80# Spiderwire Stealth. I know it seams a bit much but the reason for the 80# is the diameter makes it easy to use. This is the absolute best line on the market at this time in my book for muskys. If the outfit you have is more like a bass baitcaster I would step it down to around 60#. Put a layer of electrical tape on the spool before you spool up to keep the line from slipping on the spool. Just use the simple palomar knot to tie on your leader. This stuf is really worth the extra $$$ and it lasts a long time.
The absolutely worst line to use would be mono. If you get a line over run you will most likely be cutting it off because it backlashes so bad.
