when largemouth spawn
Question
My husband and I have a cabin in central Ohio that we vacation at. We are trying to get out there at the best possible times for largemouth fishing. Last year we went the week of memorial day and were disappointed to find the bass spawning,(not a nibble!).What times would you suggest? thanks....Kathy
Answer
Thanks Kathy for your question. Unfortunately I cannot answer it, I fish out of Florida and haven't a clue about Central Ohio.
Honestly, I can't understand why you guys couldn't catch a bass when they were spawning. That's when the female is the largest and the males are more aggressive defending the nest. It's a bit time consuming to cast repeatedly to spawning bass on the beds but worth the effort. Females will not strike a bait as you'd expect. What they are trying to do is clear the nest, they'll pick up the bait and spit it out. You have to strike when the female picks up the bait. The male will defend the nest and attack but will generally be small in comparison to the female.
If you do attempt to catch bedding bass, be as gentle as possible and release them in the same area so that they'll return to the nest. NEver attempt to catch bass on a nest if you see fry (baby fish) as this leaves the fry open to attack from predators waiting close to the beds.
I'm sorry I couldn't answer your question but hopefully gave you guys an insight to spawning bass in some way. Thanks for your question. I suggest you ask local bait shops and fishermen and women for the answer you need.
