Fising Rod
Question
I need help choosing a rod for an 18 year old who mainly trout fishes. I was considering an "Ugly Stick" but what size and duty should I go with? And how about reels? I want something with decent quality and longevity but I don't want to break the bank either. What are your suggestions? Thanks
Answer
Hi Echo,
Some one who fishes trout in streams or ponds will probably want a light action or ultra-light action rod about 6 to 6 1/2 feet long. I tend to lean towards the light action because it is a little more versatile with different lures. I would recommend something that lists the use of 4-6 pound line and lures in the 1/16th to 1/4th ounce range.
Ugly Sticks have a place in the market. They are nearly indestructible. If that is an issue with this particular fisherman, then yes. Otherwise, no. Beyond the need to be indestructible, they aren't good performers.
Nearly every rod manufacturer makes a good rod in every price range. Like anything else, you get what you pay for. Rods (or reels) under $50 aren't going to last long. Find something in your price range and stick to one of the major tackle companies and you will do well. Daiwa, Shimano, Pflueger, Quantum, and Abu Garcia are all good choices. I am not here to promote tackle, but I use nearly all Daiwa and Shimano reels and St. Croix rods.
Another option to save a little money are private label rods/reels. Places like Cabelas, Bass Pro Shop or Gander Mountain have reels made by the major manufacturers and put their name on them. They are usually 15% cheaper than the real model from the manufacturer.
If you are willing to spend $50 for the reel and about $75 for the rod you will end up with an outfit that will last a long time. And, I recommend buying from an outdoors store or independent tackle shop. The "Marts" generally carry low end tackle only.
Good fishing,
Marc
