Argus Arai Fly Rod
Question
Could someone please tell me where to find the value of a very old Argus fly rod? I have had this rod(no reel) for many years now and obtained it from an elderly gentleman years ago.It is a beautiful 5 piece rod. The Scabbard or Sheath that it is wrapped in has a sewn label in Silk that state Argus, with the word "Arai" inset of a red fish. Below that are the words Arai,Tokyo. The rod and sheath are in very good condition. The rod also has the same insignia on it as well. I may also beinterested in selling it, as I no longer fish and am now devoted more towards bird hunting. Thank You very much for your time.
Answer
Hi Robert,
I believe this is another of the brand names used for bamboo rods built in post-WWII, occupied Japan. There are several names for the rod produced but they all tend to be five piece, combination fly rod and casting rod. The handle probably has ferrules on both ends so it can be turned around to suit fly or casting rod assembly.
These rods do not have a lot of collector value. They were purchased by the thousands by GIs for about $2-$3.00 and sent home to friends and family. Just like any other production line rod, occasionally they made a really nice one. The only way to know is to try casting it and see how it performs.
Typically, you can buy these rods today for $20-$50 depending on condition. Once in a while you see one that is valued higher in mint condition and a rod that fishes well.
Thanks, Joe
