Fishing line installation on spool
Question
I cannot find any information on the prescribed technique for winding my Berkley Trileen 2LB test from the spool onto my RYOBI spinning reel for my ultralight rod ( a 5' Shimano Bull-Whip). Could yo give this newbie some advice to avoid cast and helix in the line
Answer
Hi Greg,
The spool of line should be laying flat on the table for a spinning reel. NOT running straight off with someone holding a pencil through the hole. That's for baitcasters.
So put the reel on the rod, lay the spool flat on a table. Run the line up through the stripper guide (the largest one closest to the reel)and tie it tight to the base of the spool. Close the bail and start winding with your winding hand, and put a little pressure on the line while winding with the other hand by running the line through your thumb and fore-finger. Keep your pressure hand high, like near the stripper guide.
While you are winding, watch the way that the line is coming off the spool. If it's coming off in nice relaxed loops, you have it right. If the loops are getting small and tight, flip the spool over on the table to correct it.
Fill the reel to about 1/8th inch from the edge of the spool.
A Ryobi spinning reel!!! Now that's a blast from the past! They were very good reels!
Good fishing!
