Hunter split bamboo fly rod
Question
Have a 9 ft split bamboo rod [3 sections/extra tip]with what looks like a plastic threaded reel holder(aluminum reel seats) The rod is labeled (in script) "Ed M. Hunter approved" Under that is "9' 5 5/B-HCH". Would like any info that is available as I would like to fish the rod.
Answer
Ken,
This rod was produced by Bill Phillipson in Denver, never carried the Phillipson name, but were private-label rods for specific sporting goods outlets. ( According to Bamboo Rod Restoration Handbook by Michael Sinclair) I do not know the sporting goods store or who was Ed M. Hunter. If I spent several hours researching I might or might not find him to be a local fishing pro.
It is probably a 50s- 60s rod (plastic)
Bill made good rods- it probably has purple glue lines as he usually used resorcinol glue.
HCH is the line weight- 7 weight.
This is probably a great fishing tool but the name is not well know so the value is like $150.
good Luck,
Mac
