respooling bait casting reel
Question
Marc,
What is the proper way to respool a bait casting reel?
I am concerned about how the line should come off the
bulk spool.
Thanks,
Dick
Answer
Hi Dick,
Yes there is. On a baitcaster the line should roll directly off the bulk spool and on to your reel. So, put a pencil or dowel through the center hole of the bulk spool and have someone hold it (or use a vice to hold it horizontal) horizontal and reel. It should roll off the top of the bulk spool right onto the baitcaster. Add a little tension with your non-reeling hand but not too tight. You can fill to about 1/16th inch from the edge of the spool. Some reels have a line at the rim to show you when to stop.
For a spinning reel the line spool should lay flat on a table and the line should coil onto the reel. It should be nice relaxed coils. If not, flip the spool over to the other side and that will correct it.
Good fishing!
