QuestionI came across an old 8-10ft.octagon bamboo fly pole in excelant shape , total of three pieces , 9 eyes a Martin air cell reel, and original line. The only marking I can find on it is the word what appears to be GOVELUST or GOUETSOR in script by the cork grip. Can you tell me anything about it and would it collectable today . Also have a shakespere wonderod #1181 cloth bag in excelant shape, was that model pole a fly rod?
AnswerDennis,
I am not sure of the maker of the flyrod - can you send me a clear photo of the marking?
Normally split bamboo flyrod value is based on
1. Maker - American custom made are the best, followed by high end production rods - hand made by the major companies, then low end production rods and finally low quality rods from Japan - post WW2.
2. Completeness - should have two tips, a bag and aluminum or metal tube.
3. Condition - condition of the finish, bamboo, handle. Value drops fast if the rod is not near perfect.
4. Size - certain sizes are more valueable based on scarcity, etc.
Martin reels normally run $10-$20.
#1181 is the shakspeare model number.
