I have a Montague glass rod its a 2piece that comes apart just above where the reel would be, it's yellow in color and only has 3 eye's its a short rod it has a stamp on that read's The New Yorker with a sail fish breaking water and just above that it say's Montague in the same color as the rod. The rod Has beautiful wood work, I cannot find anything on this rod everywhere I've searched there's nothing that states a New Yorker, could U please help me with this.? Thanks
Answer
Mike,
I did not know that Montague Rod and Reel Company made fiberglass rods. It was my belief they sold out to Dunton, 1955, at the end of the bamboo era.
Please go to http://www.lu-c-an.com/MontagueLabels.jpg
and tell me which if any label is on your rod .
Is it fly , casting or both ? Fly rods have reels below the handle.
There are a few sites about rod history on the Internet such as Ron Kruse抯: http://www.flyanglersonline.com/features/bamboo/archive.html
Books available in major libraries that might help
Antique & Collectable Fishing Rods: Identification & Value Guide Homel, Dan. 1997
Bamboo Rod Restoration Handbook -Michael Sinclair ( good info on old rods , too)
But I have both of the above books and they don't mention your rod.
I doubt if you are going to find much on glass rods, they aren't collected very much.
Classic & Antique Fly Fishing Tackle by A. J. Campbell does mention fiberglass p. 304- 307 . Read it online at: http://books.google.com/books?id=zY8vsd9Q_BUC&pg=PA304&lpg=PA304&dq=Classic+&+An...
