QuestionHi Jim-I may actually be able to help you out a bit about fishing in Korea. Though I've fished little myself in S Korea, I do know a little about some of the native game fish. To begin with, most of the native salmon/trout are in the relatively wild province of Kangwon. A very few bigger rivers have fall migration runs of Chum Salmon-they can be caught, but not kept, since they're protected(however this doesn't stop some villagers taking a lot of them for either eating or for fish hatcheries) There are also Manchurian Trout and Cherry(or Masou)Trout. They may also be only caught and released. Two popular non protected fish are Aucha Perch and Mandarin fish or Sogari. The former looks a bit like a bluegill or Rock Bass-up to 12 inches. The Mandarin Fish looks something like a small walleye and can reach up to 20-24 inches. There are also stocked populations of Bluegill, Largemouth Bass and Rainbow Trout in some rivers or reservoirs. Also, I do know a good fishing guide here in Korea-James Card, a great naturalist and fisherman. He and I have often hiked together. His e-mail is jamescard.net He also has his own website-it's on Google. Hopefully this will help the gentleman living near the DMZ. Feel free to give him my mail if you want. Sincerely yours-Steve Karsen.
