Question
Hurd Super Caster
I have a Hurd supercaster #54849,it has it's own leather carrying case which is in excellent condition, the rod and reel are also in excellent condition, with very little normal wear.also has a full spool of nylon line.can you help me with a little history behind it like how old it might be,and if there is any value.thank you for your time.
AnswerThe Hurd Supercaster was manufactured in the late 1940's by Hurd Lock & Manufacturing Co., of Detroit, Michigan.
The design was unsuccessful because of the innovation of the spinning reel and rod came out roughly the same time - simplying the casting of lures (you had to have a good touch with your thumb to prevent backlash of the old reels).
They seem to be running in the $100-$175 range...the plastic grip version (which sold for less $27 vs $45) is actually the rarer more valuable version. Also precise condition of the reel/rod combination will affect the price, but the original case is a big plus.
Right now prices are a bit down due to the economy so if your not it a rush, it would be worth holding on to.
