Info. on rod
Question
Hello. I have a two piece heavy fiberglass rod that I found at a yard sale and was wondering if you may know what it is. The mfg. label is not on it but it does have a label with 2899 C heavy action , 30 to 80 lb line It is 80 inches long but it comes apart at the handle, It also has a roller eye on the end. The reel on it is a Penn # 49 super mariner. It may be a Penn rod also I do not know. Any inf. you could give me I would really appreciate Thank You very much Russ
Answer
Hi Russel,
I'll start by saying that I live in the Rockies and do a lot of trout and smallmouth fishing. I have not fished in saltwater for almost 50 years and I don't claim to know much about that type of fishing.
That said, you have what appears to me to be a stand up rod suited for Tuna, Cod or bottom fishing in the saltwater based on the weight class. I don't know if it is a Penn rod or not. I did not find much info on an internet search using that model number. I'm afraid I can't help much on identifying the rod.
I don't have any reference material sepcifically for saltwater rods so I can't be much help as to value either. As far as being able to use the rod...as long as the rod is sound and the guides are good and the roller guides work fine and you have a working reel, why not?
If you are anywhere near a pier or local charter service, it might be useful to take the rod and ask a few questions about it from the guys who regularly fish with rods like that.
I apologize for not being more help. This one is a ways out of my area of expertise.
Thanks, Joe
