Question
Granger Favorite Rod B
I have a Wright & McGill Granger Favorite (3/2) 9'. One flat has:"Granger
Favorite" with the words running toward the tip. There is no "Wright & McGill"
on any of the other flats (odd?). The signature wrap is correct and the silk
colors are correct. The reeseat is marked "Wright & McGill Rod Co. Denver
Colo. USA" It's the Granger patent uplocking seat. Here's the odd part - each
section has intermediate wraps in yellow silk, as shown in the photo of the
butt section. I'm about 95 percent sure this rod has its original finish, the guy
I bought it from said it was Dad's and Dad probably hadn't had it refinished.
Anyway, what's the deal with the intermediate wraps and what's the deal with
the no Wright & McGill where it should be stamped on a flat? Could this be a
rod from fairly early in the days after W & McG took over??
AnswerTerry,
Intermediate wraps: Probably a custom request. I would have to examine it closely to determine if there is a restore / repair. But if there is no grade number ( see below ) I am guessing a repair.
I would also guess that this is an early rod in the days after
Wright & McGill took over?

Bamboo Rod Restoration Handbook -Michael Sinclair
Classic & Antique Fly-Fishing Tackle: A Guide for Collectors & Anglers by anomaly Campbell
There is nothing in the books on this anomaly but in Sinclair:
the reel seat is roll stamped with a number that can date the rod. Also rubber stamped on flat #1 above the winding check is a grade indicator . What you got ?
Good Luck,
Mac
