Hardy Palakona Bamboo Fly Rod
Question
Hi, I'm interested in valuing a fly rod and getting your opinion about repairing one of the 2 tips. Details:
It is a 2 piece Hardy's Palakona bamboo fly rod, w/extra tip whose end is broken/missing the last 4 inches.
I have the original green bag which includes a stiched owners patch with the Hardys logo and a silver metal case that has a similar faded painted Hardys logo on it. "Made by Hardy Bros. LTD England" is engraved on the metal cap of the case
The rod is 6'9" long when put together, each of the 2 pieces are 41" long, it has a down locking silver metal slide ring reel seat with cigar shaped cork grip. "H27336" is engraved on the slide ring.
"Made by Hardy's England" is engraved on teh lower end of the reel seat, it is a silver metal.
Markings just above the cork handle include: The "f.f. de France" "Palakona" Regal Trade Mark.
The diameter above the cork is slightly greater than 1/4inch.
It was left to me by my uncle's estate. Before he passed, he told me he bought it in England when he was stationed there during World War II.
It has great sentimental value to me, but I would like to know the value and know if fixing the extra tip is worth while or practical. It's a clean break, but I don't have the missing 4 inches.
Thank you for your help.
Answer
Dave,
The extra tip: Having it adds to the value . Some bamboo rodders would repair it but most would not. Most would have a new one made matching the old.
The Hardy web page
has history http://www.hardyandgreyscanada.com/hardy/history.php
and a database http://www.hardyandgreyscanada.com/hardy/roddating.php
which says H27336 was made in 1959. I know you wrote WWII - check the letter in the serial number, E makes more sense.
The fact you have the sock and tube adds value close to having 2 whole tips.
The seven footer is worth more than longer rods.
According to Antique & Collectable Fishing Rods: Identification & Value Guide Homel, Dan. 1997 (2nd edition 2000); the 9 ft model Palakona has an extra tip valued at $90, 185 and $325 for poor, good, excellent condition respectively. You could add 30% due to the age of the book.
Looking at sold items on ebay I see 2 9 footers for 200 and 300. An 8 footer sold for 495, another 260. You have to know what you are selling to get good prices on ebay.
Good Luck,
Mac
