fishing rod....make?
Question
I recently purchased an old boat rod...looks like a Harnell as far as colors go...but inside the oval is "Sportsman" P.G.CO. San Francisco. I can't read the word above the Sportsman. Are you aware of this old San Francisco Company that made this fiberglass rod. It is 7' 2". Guides in great shape...handle a little rough with a small split in reel seat. Can you tell me anything about his rod...RARE? Valuable? Whatever? Thank you so much.

Answer
Hi Greg,
Sorry, I don't have a clue and can't seem to find one.
If you are pretty sure it is a Harnell blank, you might do some searching for Harnell or Harrington rods for sale and see what you find that matches. If it is one of those, they are not being made now. There was a revival of Harnell/Harrington blank making but I believe that stopped a few years ago.
As to value, if you can find anything similar, you can probably use that as a guide to tell you what your rod might be worth.
The reel seat damage will hurt depending on how bad it is and whether or not it interferes with using the rod.
It is possible that P.G. Co. was an outlet or sporting goods store that sold rods made on Harnell blanks. It is also possible P.G. Co. was a one man rod building shop (like mine) that built rods on Harnell blanks. It is even possible that Harnell made the rods and put the P.G. Co. label on them. I don't know and can't seem to find anything useful about the company (P.G. CO.).
Thanks, Joe
