Horrocks Ibbotson Rod Value

Question
Hi. My father had this Horrocks Ibbotson pole that is a little over 5 foot long and it has a decal with a double diamond logo including the banner reading Best by Test  and then outside of that it has Florida Special No. 29. The other side is stamped in writing Double Built. It is a beautiful pole and I was wondering if you could give me a value.
Thank you for your time.
Lynda

Answer
Hi Lynda,

The logo you describe dates from the latter half of the 1930s.  My books do not reference the "Florida Special No. 29" model, but not every model is contained in the books I have on hand.  I do have listed other comparable models from the late 1930s made by H-I.  Based on those comparisons, I would estimate the value of your rod to be $40-$60 for Good to Very Good condition and $70-$90 for Excellent to Mint condition.

It is also important to remember that even given these comparison valuations, the actual value of your rod can only be determined by and in person inspection and a review of the current market.

I rarely see the shorter casting style rods sell for anything close to the valuations provided by these reference books.  This is most likely due to the readily available supply of cheaper, lighter weight rods on today's market.  The casting and spinning rods of the bamboo era just don't seem to have the following that the bamboo fly rods enjoy.

This in no way means the rod is not special.  There are people who do enjoy the vintage bamboo era rods of all types.  And, it is certainly special to you as it was your father's rod.  These old rods were built to be fished with...as long as it is in good condition, fish with it and think about your father when you do.

Thanks,  Joe
