Split cane fly rod by Forshaws Liverpool
Question
Hi Joe
I've just acquired an immaculate, pretty well unused Forshaws of Liverpool 'Firecrest' fly rod, 8.5ft,2 piece, lined butt and tip rings, others chromed twin legs, threaded aluminium alloy reel seat. I was wondering :
1) Approximate age of rod ?
2) Cost when new ?
3) Recommended line weight ?
4) Did I pay over the odds at ?0.00 ($61.31 )? Not really bothered about resale value, this rod's definitely for using !
5) Anything known about Forshaws ? Cant find much on the web at all
Thanks in anticipation

Answer
Hi Steve,
I have no information in my reference books on Forshaws fly rods. I also did a little looking on the internet and found a couple of rods that had been offered for sale, but no company or rod builder information. I'll keep an eye out for information on this company in the future.
Most of the vintage rods handle 5WT and/or 6WT line pretty well. If this one is light weight, you might want to try a 4WT; if it is a heavier rod, move up to a 7WT or 8WT line.
The price is not bad in my opinion. You certainly can not buy a modern bamboo rod in great condition for that price. In "immaculate, pretty well unused" condition my guess would be that the rod is worth a good deal more than what you paid.
Should you find any other information on Forsahws, let me know. I like to add to my reference materials whenever possible.
Thanks, Joe
