appraisal for Orvis rods
Question
I have 2 Orvis rods that belonged to my Dad and I am trying to find out what they are worth and if you sell them.
Orvis Battenkill serial number 68640 Bamboo Fly Rod with 2 tips weight 4.5oz length 8?br>
Orvis Limestone serial number 4077 Graphite Fly Rod Length 8.5? weight 2.5oz (for #6 line)
They are both in excellent condition. No reels.
I hope that you can help me determine value as it is part of an estate. I can send pictures later if need be.
Answer
Pam,
I could have used the number of sections but here's my best guess.
Orvis is an old standard name in fly rods .
The book:
Antique & Collectable Fishing Rods: Identification & Value Guide Homel, Dan. 1997 (2nd edition 2000) add about 30% for age of book.
The Battenkill:
You can find the Orvis bamboo rod serial number Database at
http://mysite.verizon.net/vze2h7gi/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderfiles/orvis.htm
I look in the database and could not find your number 68640, but probably a 50s model. Homel gives the 8 ft 3 piece, c 1965 model Battenkill has an extra tip ,a value of $135, 300 and $500 for poor, good, excellent condition respectively.
The Limestone:
I would search ebay but graphite rods are generally not collected and are not in any of my books. Although the model name was used on bamboo the values are much lower.
Good Luck,
Mac
