Question
rod2
first let me thank you for the clear and concise answer you gave me about my heddon expert fly rod.
i have a "Beacon deluxe" fly rod.
the only other writing on it is"finest quality tubular glass"that is a decal.
its a 3 piece rod.
i'm guessing the original length was 7-1/2'.
it needs a female ferrule on the middle piece that connects to the tip. an inch or so of this section is missing.
there aro no guides on the rod
the finish is tarnished and worn off in places.
i would like to restore it to a "fishable"condition.
Based on the info i have given do you think its worth the cost{say $100.00} of restoring?
If so i need instructions on stripping off the old finish.
what material i need to refinish it with.
how to attach guides without a guide winder.
where to purchase a new ferrule.
how do i measure the rod to get the correct ferrule.
i attached a pic of the rod
Any info either "how to" or where to find how to will be greatly appreciated.
thanks
AnswerEd,
You are welcome for the answer on the Heddon. I hope you gave me feedback and possibly even a nomination.
But you have stumped me with fiber glass. They are fine fishing tools but they are not collected. Only a few well known makers have fiberglass rods in the price guides.
Value is under $50. It would be a great project rod.
I have used flexcoat 2 part epoxy rod finish on guides on both graphite and glass rods.
I believe you can't strip the finish off fiberglass. I believe the finish is part of the glass. I haven't tried but you could , please report back. Use a non water based stripper such as Old Dads , Citristrip , or BTX Stripper. The dip it with a clear water proof spar or polyurethane .
Here's an inexpensive dipper ($5) system. http://www.geocities.com/macsrods/dip.html
If you want a drawing / specifications write up on the dip tube email
[email protected] and ask for dip tube drawing.doc
I don't think you can attach guides without a guide winder. Check Cabellas for purchase or rent one from your local fly shop - they probably have rod building classes that would help. I have rod building classes in Denver.
Ferrules - I have them $7 each includes shipping but I need to know size. They are sold in size 64ths Try:

Try HOW TO REFINISH BAMBOO RODS STEP BY STEP Author: Artie Hebert
Price: around $20 , Cabelas has it http://www.cabelas.com/link-12/product/0036466620908a.shtml
so does shofftackle.com
I have seen it and is a good start.
My bibliology on rod building and restoration http://www.geocities.com/macsrods/ResourceListRodBuilding.htm
Rodmakers list serve http://www.canerod.com/rodmakers/dirs.html (the virtual community of bamboo fly rod makers) has allot of rod restorers on it.
