Please help me identify fly rod
Question
Rich,
My name is Edd Fairman and I am actually an expert for About.com in Magic and Illusion. Anyway, my Grandfather has been cleaning out his basement and I was given an old fly fishing rod and no one I know fly fishes and I figure I can sell if for a few bucks. I ran an internet search for the name on it and came up with nothing. I will try to answer all of your questions in your description. It is a fly rod, bamboo. It says, 揕. & C. Regent #R-124?above the cork. It is 9 feet long. It is 3 sections (there is an extra tip section). It is stored in a cloth bag inside of an aluminum tube. The reel mounts below the cork. There is a ring below the cork that screws up and down to hold the reel it says 揚at. No. 1624052?I think. The 5th number ??may be a 6. It抯 hard to tell. Any help is greatly appreciated.
Answer
Edd,
L. & C. is probably Lyon and Coulson.
Lyon and Coulson was a retail mail order tackle house located in Buffalo, NY. They sold a wide range of outdoor gear from the 1920抯 through the 1940抯. The main rod supplier to L&C was Heddon. Unlike some other tackle houses, L&C did little to change the appearance of the standard Heddon line except to give the rods their own model designations. Mike Sinclair gives the following equivalent: Regent = Heddon #20.
Antique & Collectable Fishing Rods: Identification & Value Guide Homel, Dan. 1997 (2nd edition 2000) ,add about 30% for age of book, gives the value for an 8 foot Regent model with an extra tip, 2 sections the value of $70, 160 and $325 for poor, good, excellent condition respectively. The 2 -9 foot rods mentioned , 3 sections are little less .
Luck,
Mac
