Antique/Old Fly Reels and Boxes
Question
I discovered some antiques, two fenwick fly rods which i got assistance with, but i have 4 old reels and an old split shot container. First, I have 2 Pflueger Progress Reels made in the U.S., both with No. 1774 on them. They are simple dragless gray spooled blackish reeled but the spools don't remove. The next reel is a Martin made in the U.S. also, but all it says is "Precision Fishing Reel and an underlined 61. It's a closed reel with 2 holes to put line on and has a black base and spool cover with a grayish spool and is also dragless. The last is a Shakespeare alpha 2528G made in Hong Kong, and its all black with a screw that you adjustively tighten for drag. The split shot container is an Orvis Star that you turn to get different sizes. There are no split shot left in it, but it has 6 compartments, a green base, semi clear top with the writing on it, and the turning knob on top is red. It was made in France. I would greatly appreciate your expertise to help me identify when these 5 items are from, and what their value may be. I though have no intention of selling them. I'm sorry I didn't send pictures, but I will if you need them. Thank You much, -Wyatt
Answer
Hi Wyatt,
The two Pflueger 1774's are worth about $20-$30 each and maybe near $50 if you have the original box in good condition.
The Martin 61 is probably only $10-$20 and the Shakespeare Alpha maybe not even that much.
I don't know anything about the split-shot box. There may be some Orvis collectors out there that may be interested in that. I would guess $10-$20 tops for something like that.
Collectability wise, the problem with the reels is that they were very common at the time. I believe you can still buy the Martin 61.
Good fishing,
Marc
