Question
Fly rod
Good evening, I recently purchased a nice bamboo fly rod, and wonder if you can help identify the maker. It has a label (partial) with a fish that's marked "________ BRAND" (see photos). Also marked "No 10.5". I certainly appreciate any information you may be able to provide concerning maker.
Regards,
Rick Paulson
AnswerRick,
There is no rod maker with a label with a fish that's marked "________ BRAND", in my memory or books.
Books:
Antique & Collectable Fishing Rods: Identification & Value Guide Homel, Dan. 1997 (2nd edition 2000) add about 30% for age of book
Bamboo Rod Restoration Handbook -Michael Sinclair
Classic & Antique Fly-Fishing Tackle: A Guide for Collectors & Anglers by A.J. Campbell
I hope you enjoy the rod. It might be a great rod.
Heres what I can tell you , the metal looks like chrome plated brass , which means cheap construction. The handle looks like sheet cork which means even cheaper.
If it is not in the books then collectors are probably not looking for it. This means low resale value.
If you put a gun to my head I would say Montague or Horrocks-Ibbotson. Could be a Chubb , check for patents on all metal pieces including tip tops. (Thomas Chubb printed them on small pieces of metal)
Luck,
Mac
