Question
Hi Joe, I was curious if you could tell me some more on this bamboo rod?The thing about this rod is that it has engraved in the gold handle is H.M King George V on it.I was wondering if you could give a value on this or any info on this
Answer
Hi Jim,
Hardy Bros, LTD, of Alnwick, England, was awarded a Royal Warrant by King George V of England which (apparently) allows them to use the royal designation on items they produce. Hardy was also awarded warrants from the King of Spain and the King of Italy. Hardy made a wide variety of high quality products; and they are still in business today. You may want to do some research on Hardy Brothers, Ltd., on your own to learn more about the company and its products.
The "H.M. King George V" engraving is almost certainly a designator that refers to the royal warrant. The use of this designator was obviously a great marketing aid for their company...everyone wants the same products used by the King. Hardy made a large number of different bamboo rod models and typically inscribed the rods with black ink on the rod shaft. The model name, any numbers written on the rod, and rod length are pieces of information that can help identify this particular rod and help in estimating a value. It does appear the rod was made in the early 1900s.
I have reference books that address many of the Hardy rods by model name and length, and provide estimated values. I don't have a serial number listing for Hardy rods, but I wish I did as it would make the job of identifying their rods easier. Sorry, but I can't do much with the limited data you provided. If you can reply with additional information, I may be able to help with value.
Thanks, Joe
