Question
3-Jays J. Kennedy Fish
I have inherited a 3-Jays J. Kennedy Fisher Graphite Fishing Rod - the label on the rod states: "3 JAYS" since 1922, GRAPHITE J.Kennedy Fisher Inc. Los Angeles, CA 90043"... it was Custom made by my father-in-law for my husband when he was a kid in the 70's - they were avid fishermen on Whidbey Isl here in the Pac NW & fished primarily for Salmon & I think this Rod was made for that but I'm not sure... it comes it 2 pcs, together measuring approximately 8' - it is Graphite - I'm very curious as to the value of this Rod & any info anyone can provide on it... picture is attached & I have more available if necessary... Thank-you!
AnswerHi Linda,
Graphite rod blanks were available in the 1970s and I believe the company that made the "3-Jays" brand was a producer of both rod blanks and rods. The Fisher company does not appear to be in business any longer. I assume this is a rod your father-in-law built for his son using a 3-Jays blank. It appears to be a spinning rod or maybe a mooching rod given the guides used and the sliding reel seat used on the long and straight handle. It would likely make a nice steelhead rod.
The rod appears to be in good condition and should be useful for someone wanting to fish here in the NW. It does not appear to have any particular collector value and is probably more valuable to your husband since it was built by his father. It could sell in the $40-$75 range to the right buyer depending on how badly a he/she wants it. It could just as easily sell for much less...it sort of depends on who you find that might want it.
Thanks, Joe
