6 sided metal fishing rod.
Question
Hello; I recently found a 6 sided steel fishing rod wrapped in a cloth cover. The rod did not have a handle, just the pole. The rod is 45" in length, has 2 guides plus tip, brown in color. The eyes and tip are chrome, wrapped in reddish orange. There is a number 8 or 00 on the receiver end depending on how you look at it. The receiver end is round metal with a flat side to attach to the handle. I can not find a makers name anywhere. I have been a fisherman over 50 years and have not seen this rod before. Any information you can provide would be very helpful. Thanks for your time and consideration. GARY
Answer
Gary,
I have seen several of these metal rods. There is little to no history written on them. The collectors set these interests and prices as well as encouraging the history.
Information that might help others
1 Is this rod telescoping?
2 Fly or spin/cast rod ? - handle above or below reel seat?
I am assuming that the 8 or 00 is the size of a guide ?
I do not understand nor is it common rod terminology, " receiver end "?
I did find a little history on steel rods in Classic and Antique Fly Fishing Tackle: A Guide for Collectors and Anglers By A. J. Campbell

The only time I have seen these metal rods sell for more than 25 was to a restaurant to decorate a wall.
A recent search of completed items on ebay confirms the above 'guesstamate'.
