butt end repair on casting rod
Question
I have A Quantum model QXLC 86MSS graphite salmon steelhead rod and the reel holder will pivot and or spin all the way around on the blank how can I secure this in the right place
Answer
Hi Mark,
This is the rod repair guys worst nightmare! There are several options and you aren't going to like any of them.
Option 1: Take the one or two guides off the lower section of rod (I'm guessing this is 2-piece). Bust off the cork fore-grip. Slip off the reel seat and apply new epoxy. Slip the seat back on and let it cure in place. Now replace the fore grip and guides. Not fun!
Option 2: Similar to above, but remove the rear grip. Not fun either.
Option 3: Drill a couple small (1/8-3/16) holes in the seat and into the bushing between the rod blank and reel seat. Not in the threaded part. Under where the reel goes is the least conspicuous. Now add Devcon 2-Ton epoxy in the holes and spin the reel seat around and around making the glue spread around. Don't drill through the rod. Just through the seat and whatever bushing they have below. If you want, rotate the seat 90 degrees and drill more holes in the bushing through the two existing holes. Rotate a little more (90 deg) and do it again, and again... Fill each set of holes with epoxy. When you get all the holes filled, rotate back to the original spot (make sure it's lined up straight) and over fill the holes. You can file off the excess flush later. This usually does it.
Option 4: Reel seat glues are generally heat sensitive. This may work if you are really, really lucky. Gently!!!! heat up the seat in place with a hot hair dryer or a mild heat gun. Rotate the seat a few times and let it cool in the correct place. Sometimes there is enough glue under there that if you re-heat it you can get it to bond again.
Good luck,
Marc
