Heddon Mark V Glass Fly Rod
Question
Joe, I have a Heddon Pal #8467 Mark V 8-1/2' Glass Fly Rod. The Line guides appear to have been wrapped with a "fine" metal (maybe stainless) thread. All of the wraps are in good condition, but they also have what appears to be "a slight green tinted corrosion" build-up. Is there a way to clean these to get the metal wrappings "shiney again"? Thanks! Tried Brasso/Lighter Fluid/a Light Degreaser / even a buffing wheel. Nothin' worked.
Answer
Hi Rick,
What you have is most likely a Lifetime Pal fly rod and the wraps are indeed done in stainless steel wire. Collector value is not high...maybe in the $25-$50 range depending on condition...but this should be a good rod for fishing.
Well, you tried most of what I would have thought of first for cleaning. I did some checking and found that warm water and mild dish soap are useful for cleaning stainless. It might be that the green tint is coming from grit and dirt caught down in between the wraps of wire? Maybe using a mild soap and an old toothbrush will clean those out and get rid of the tint?
There are also some commercial stainless steel cleaners and polishes on the market, but I don't know much about them so you would need to do some comparisons and select one.
Thanks, Joe
