QuestionQUESTION: The following is on the base of the rod just above the cork grip.
Pan Fish FLY Rod P F . 7 For H D H or D
Guides are wrapped with nylon and painted with red paint. Some of the guides are rusted in two or missing. others are rusted. Ferrules are in rough shape and stuck. Cork looks like it has a coating on it and is worn cracked and chipped. The down locking reel seat lower lip is bent up. I want to strip it down to the fiberglass and start over if I can. I just do not want to damage the fiberglass. I love the action of the fiber glass and it does have sentimental connections so I do want to at least replace the guides.
ANSWER: Larry,
I am pretty sure it reads "Panfish Fly Rod" not "Pan Fish FLY Rod", right ?
I don't see a question in your message so I am assuming you want a value statement.
There is not as much written on fiberglass as bamboo so I don't have much information for you . This fact means they are not collected as much and bring little resale value.
Your rod is also in poor condition. I would be hard pressed to get $25 for it . Pictures might tell me something different,

QUESTION: Actually the way I had the words spaced is how it is on the rod and the upper and lower case is just as I typed it.
I am sorry I did not frame what I said in the form of a question. I was trying to give as complete a description as I could without being longwinded.
Here is the actual question. How do I remove all the old guides, and possibly the reel seat and cork without damaging the fiberglass.
I want to rebuild this rod because I like the action of the fiberglass. I can live with the old reel seat and cork, but if it is not too difficult to remove the reel seat and the cork without damaging the fiberglass I want to replace them.
How would this vintage of fly rod be built that is how are the reel seats mounted. Or more importantly how can I remove it without damaging the fiberglass.
Thank you for your time!
AnswerLarry,
No further information on ID. I hope you'll forgive my presumption on typos but I get many , daily.
How to remove guides: Slide a razor blade carefully on top of the feet of the guides to cut the thread finish and thread. Use your fingers to clean it up, pulling the thread finish. There is a separate finish on the rod than the threads. If needed slide the razor under thread, making small slices parallel to the rod. If you nick the rod remember you are going to cover it with thread a Gudebrod Epoxy, 2 part Rod Finish.
Most old cork will give way to pressure. If you have ever husked dry corn it is the same method. One hand wrapped around the cork then tear in a circular motion, other hand rotating the rod the opposite direction.
Very high grit (500-800) sandpaper can be carefully use to remove old glue and cork.
If the reel seat doesn't come off with some pulling pressure you on into an more advance task , so go slow and careful. Don抰 use pliers or tools. You are going to melt the old glue. A heat gun, steam kettle, hair drier , alcohol lamp or any non carbon heat source will do i.e. don't use a candle. You need to protect your hands like leather gloves as you rotate the reel seat close to the heat and pull. Repeat until it comes apart. Remember low heat so that it seeps into the middle, not unlike a steak well done. I made a puller for ferrules and reel seats that make it easier - http://www.lu-c-an.com/ferrulepuller.html.
I hope this helps you, but feel free to ask for more , anytime.
