Montague Sunbeam Bamboo Rod
Question
I have a Montague Sunbeam with a broken tip. I am wondering if you can give me an address for Montague Repair? If not then possibly someone who could give me an estimate to redo the broken piece.
Thank you, Phil
Answer
Hi Phil,
The Montague company essentially went out of business in 1955 when the company assests were sold to another firm. They have not made or marketed rods for quite some time.
The Sunbeam model of the Montague bamboo fly rods was one of their less expensive models, maybe the high end of the less expensive models. They sold a lot of bamboo rods. A Sunbeam model today would be valued in the $75-$150 range depending on length and condition.
Repairing the tip section would be a job for a professional rod builder. I am certain there are some in your area and it is possible you can find someone locally that can do the work. Look in the phone book, ask at tackle shops and ask members of local fly fishing clubs for referals.
You might also check online at one of the fly fishing discussion forums to find a rod builder in your area. There are forums that discuss only bamboo fly rods and the participants would know who can do the work in your part of the country.
Thanks, Joe
