Wright McGill fiberglass rod
Question
Hi , I bought this fiberglass rod just as a joke because I'd never seen a square rod before. Now I wonder to its value ???( I bought it for 2 dollars at the flea). How old is it ? Should I be using it or hang it on the wall? Its a Wright McGill Daisy SS 6 1/2' square fiberglass 2 peice rod. Thanks Tom
Answer
Hi Tom,
You can find square and round solid fiberglass rods still out there in the flea markets. They date from the 1950s-1960s and don't really have much collector value. You might triple your money on this one...maybe even get as much as $10 in excellent condition.
They are very durable rods, work well, and catch fish. They are heavy by comparison to today's rods. The square ones tend to be Wright-McGill but I don't know if that was an exclusive thing or if other brands also had square rods. My first fly rod was a round solid glass rod that I still have but don't use much these days...it and I are both retired.
Use it. You may find you like it better than the new ones. You can certainly afford to have a whole boat full of these.
Thanks, Joe
