QuestionI have a 8' dry fly rod by Garcia Conolon model # 8237-D, Still in plastic and never been used. Could you tell me what you think its worth.
I also have a (right around 8') 4 piece maybe bamboo rod. It comes in a holder that hold all four pieces so that they can fit in a sleeve. I can get yo pictures if that would help. But was wondering if you could tell me how to find out who made it and what its worth. thanks Robert
AnswerHi Robert,
An unused (mint) Gracia fly rod would be valued about $50, maybe a little more. There are many people who prefer the Conolon rods and you need to find one of them and negotiate a price. Actual value on the older glass rods always depends on condition and how badly the potential buyer wants it. Obviously, you can't get much better on condition.
Pictures on the bamboo rod will help. If there are any decals or markings on the rod or anything stamped into the reel seat or butt cap that may provide clues. If there are no markings, it usually comes down to looking at grip, reel seat, ferrules, guides, wraps, the wooden case and the bamboo itself to try to make an educated guess as to maker. Often it is just that...a guess and nothing more. A lot of the vintage rod makers used parts from the same source/supplier so it can be misleading at times.
Be happy to help. Send pictures to
[email protected] and I'll look at them for you.
Thanks, Joe
