Heddon rod and reel

Question
I was givin an older looking rod and reel from a friend and was wondering it's worth. It is a King Coho rod 7'4" in length with a long handle below the reel with a big rubber stopper. The stopper is too big to fit into todays rod holders, at least my big johns. the reel is a spin casting, very large and dark green. The whole thing reminds me off todays surf rods but is too short, i would think. It seems to be a heavy action rod by todays standards. Both rod and reel are heddon and i would say excellent to very good shape. It looks like a package that you would buy from Gander Mtn. or cabellas today, only a lot older

Answer
Hi Josh,

My reference books do not specifically list the "King Coho" rod from Heddon...but I have found that they don't list everything.  This sounds like either a boat rod of a surf rod.  Typically, the boat rods would be casting style rods with the reel mounted on top.  A spinning setup tends to indicate to me that this is a surf rod.

The length is not surprising.  I have a vintage solid wood (ash or hickory) surf rod that is right at 8 feet long.  It looks like a pool cue with guides attached to a long handle.  You did not say if this one is bamboo or glass.  If bamboo, the value would probably be in the $60-$100 range; maybe a little more.  If glass, about half that or less.

Thanks,  Joe
