Question
Dear Rich; how are you?
I have a lamiglas Model MBF 910 fly rod, 9ft/2pcs, good moderate fast action, rated for 10w+ line. It came with a # 3 ball type cork/eva butt installed.
I am thinking of converting this into a two-handed centerpin rod by removing the current butt and replacing it with a longer 5" Pac Bay fighting screw-on spey butt grip.
I believe I could be more comfortable and a lot more efficinet with this set up by having a few more inches to hold this rod during casting.
Unfortunately, looks like Lamiglas glued this cork/EVA butt to the end of the rear seat. A friend said tearing the butt apart is the only way but I would like to save the butt if I could.
Please let me know if there's hope or any fix you can recommend.
Thanks much in advance Sir.
Regards.

AnswerDave,
I have done similar tasks with graphite, fiberglass and bamboo rods.
Applying heat carefully will release the glue without destroying anything. This is not an easy trick. You can use a heat gun ( my favorite), hair dryer , alcohol lamp or butane torch but not a carbon source like a candle. I have heard guys use ovens and steam kettles but I haven't seen it. Your goal is to heat the inside of the reel seat, so you rotate it allot. You rotate spreading the heat but not burning the part. You also need to pull as you heat so I use leather gloves.
I would charge $30 for this kind of repair.
